I  was planning to start a few more small websites to diversify my income. I already had more than 10 websites hosted on a VPS with WestHost . If there was any problem with the WestHost data center, I did not want all my websites to be down.  I was searching for a reliable web hosting company, since even a downtime of an hour could cost me more than a months hosting fees in lost revenues.

Dreamhost is a very popular  web hosting company, you will see many websites and blogs recommending their web hosting. Their price is also very good - $ 7.95 per month when paid for 2 years .Many coupons for $97 were available, so you could get the first year for less than 3 $ per month. They offered 200GB disk storage , unlimited domains and shell access.  A free domain name was also provided. I had some money in my PayPal account and since withdrawing money is tedious, I decided to purchase hosting through PayPal.

Though many people had posted their problems with DreamHost , I decided to give it a try. Since I did not want a free domain name, I  sent a request to their customer support if  I could be provided any additional feature instead. But their customer support took almost 12 hours to reply to my email. They said it was not possible to get another add-on instead.

I decided to go ahead, I filled the form and entered the coupon code. When I went to the checkout stage, I  got the message that since I was using a coupon, I could only pay by credit card. At this stage, I decided to do some further research on DreamHost.

At WebHosting Talk , there are numerous complaints about how DreamHost shuts down a website after it becomes popular. Since they are a very large hosting company, many of  their servers have problems. The company is rated as F by the Better Business Bureau (BBB) since they do not respond to customer complaints. The 97 day money back offer is only available if you pay by credit card, it is difficult to get a refund for payments through PayPal.

After reading about these problems, I decided against hosting my websites with DreamHost. But if you have a low traffic hobby website which does not earn much money, DreamHost offers a good deal. .
