One of the most lucrative offers doing the rounds today is an opportunity to do "affiliate marketing".Here what actually happens is that a company uses several-tier marketing scheme to sell its products or services. There are many people who are arranged in a pyramid like structure and are all connected to each other while promoting, marketing and selling of the parent company's product/services.

In this connection, recently, I got an opportunity to meet some of Herbalife members –one of the affiliate marketers.

On 20 August 2006, I was invited by one of my friends to 3rd Floor, Nippon Center, Near Ram Mandir, Dadar (East) at 3 pm. He told me that its about a "life changing" opportunity, a "God send Gift" and what not. I went ahead just to show some enthusiasm for my childhood friend.

There were more than 50 people present there (apart from herbalife members), all looking quite unsure of the purpose of the "meeting"

The "meeting" started with a very young guy (supposedly who has done Chartered Accountancy course) congratulating all of us to take up this opportunity to get health, wealth, happiness, and success…

Then came the introduction to herbalife products. They told us that they have a range of "nutritional supplements" designed by some Nobel Prize Winner from USA, which give nutrition to our bodies from the cellular level and thus eliminate obesity and related diseases.

This made many people start taking interest in the product. But just after giving a brief overview of products-came the marketing pitch for becoming a herbalife affiliate member.

The rest of 2 hours were spent just in glorifying how by becoming an affiliate member I would become a millionaire within a year and all my dreams will be fulfilled and I will drive a Mercedes and so on…

First, I would have to buy a "registration kit" for about 8000 rupees, which will give me a "complimentary" herbalife basic nutrition kit, and then I have to make more members below me and as they start earning (by making more members, of course), I will earn a percentage of their earnings as well.

In a nutshell, my chances of becoming a millionaire depends on how many people I can convince to become a member!

When I told them that I am not at all interested in doing a business, they asked me if I had some free time everyday and would I not like to do a "part time job" in that!

On interaction with some other participants, I came to know that prior to coming for the "meeting" they had no idea about the name or purpose of the company! They were simply told by some of their friends about a "once in a lifetime" opportunity in a Multi-National Company, a part time job and they had come to "take advantage" of that opportunity.

Needless to us, all of us learnt that its better to keep away from such dishonest companies who do not have the guts to say that they are actually promoting business and not a Part time job!
