Spice Jet was launched with much
fanfare about a year ago. Just like other low cost airlines, it also
promised a no-frills but comfortable journey in the sky. Like many other
unsuspecting people, I too believed it!
In fact we were quite happy with the way things had progressed so far. We
had booked the tickets online about 10 days ago, and even got a Monsoon
Mega Sale offer where, on booking a return ticket, one of the tickets cost
only Rs. 999! The normal price was about Rs.2500. But we got a huge
saving. The price was not the lowest, when compared with Air Deccan (the
leader in Low Cost Airlines), still we thought that we ought to give this
a try, with the slogans of "the power to fly for everyone" and "the power
of performance" on the website of Spice Jet. Moreover, we got to select
our seats also at the time of booking only. So far, So Good!
But our perception changed completely on 17th July 2006 when I, along with
my dad, went to board the Mumbai-Delhi 11:55 am Flight No.114 . We reached
the airport at sharp 10:15 am and went through the security check and
baggage deposit procedures quite smoothly and were in waiting lounge by
10:45.
Then the clock started ticking with no indication whatsoever from Spice
Jet staff as to what is the position of the flight. We kept discussing our
other waiting co-passengers as to why there was no word about our flight.
Meanwhile, all flights of Jet Airways, Sahara, and Indian Airlines etc.
were flying as per schedule!
Two hours later, completely numb with boredom, hunger and impatience, all
the waiting passengers went to the Spice Jet terminal to ask about the
flight. There was no reply and we were simply asked to "be patient"!!!
Finally at 12:55 pm, there was one curt announcement of the flight being
ready for departure.
Again there was total chaos at departure terminal, with some tickets being
checked while others weren't and some people even jumped the queues and
the staff was totally unable to control the crowd.
After boarding the aircraft, the pilot apologized for the delay citing
"bad weather" as the reason. However, at that point of time, all that we
wanted was some food.
Alas! That was not to be. After the flight took off, we came to know that
there was not a single piece of food item on board! We were given one
small bottle of mineral water and a piece of biscuit to satisfy our
hunger. We could not even buy anything even if we wanted to! Moreover,
there was no newspaper or magazine to read, and the worst part being the
air pressure inside the cabin, which kept dipping and led to immense pain
in ear! That was a horrible flight.
That was the first and the last time anyone from my family entered a Spice
Jet flight! On alighting at Delhi, I came to know about similar horror
stories from many of my relatives; Spice Jet is indeed a Spice less Fare!
